Ride Them Clouds
My Dad is a church goer; he's there almost every Sunday. He's fishing and hunting buddies with the preacher and, for an 87 year old, he's as active in the church as he can be. He doesn't talk much about his faith...don't think I've ever heard him pray a single time. Anyway...I got to thinking about how a prayer from him might sound. This song is simply that prayer put to music.
I Wouldn't Trade
This song has a double meaning. First, is there anything you'd trade for life in Christ?...i.e., now that you know you're a child of God is there anything else you'd trade for Him? Secondly, is there anything you wouldn't trade for life in Christ?...i.e., are you willing to trade everything you have for life in Christ?
More Cows
My father-in-law was a farmer/rancher. Dick loved his cows...even named 'em all. Any time someone asked him about anything his answer was 'more cows'. For instance...'boy that's a pretty sunset huh Dick'...'it'd be prettier if I had more cows'...'that hay-grazer is sure looking good this year ain't it Dick'...'it'd look a lot better if I had more cows'. You get the picture. When grace shows us who we are in Christ...when we have the entirety of Jesus living in, as and through us...well, we don't need more of anything...not even cows.
Charlie's Song
My wife had a boyfriend...that's hard to admit but it's true. His name was Charlie; 89 years old and completely smitten with my bride. Charlie's wife Lil went to heaven about ten years before Jeniece and I met him at church. We loved that ol' man...he loved us too. Charlie was ready to go home to Lil...he even told her he'd meet her right there at the gate. He loved Jesus and knew heaven was his reward. We were eating lunch one time when the discussion centered on Lil. Charlie said these words that spurred the writing of his song...'after hugging Jesus I'm gonna see Lil'. I couldn't make that line work in his song until I reworked it to say 'after hugging Jesus I can't wait to see my Lil'. I got to sing it to Charlie a few weeks before he left for heaven. I think he liked it since he asked me to sing it at his funeral. He was a wonderful friend. And his faith was an inspiration.
Music Mountain
I was in the grocery store once looking for some bottled water. Up on the shelf I saw a brand with the name Music Mountain. I couldn't get home fast enough to write down all the insights those two words were churning inside me. The Bible speaks of living water that never stops flowing into and out of the saints of God. The words to this song are some of my favorites...they speak of God's love and hope, which, I believe, are as big as a mountain.
Ol' Joe Haney
I asked Dad if he'd tell me how he became a Christian...'I ain't gonna tell ya'...'c'mon Pop, you can tell me, I'm your son'...'nope, I ain't gonna tell ya nothin'...'I won't tell anyone'...'you sure won't cause I'm not tellin' you to begin with'...'dadgum Pop'...'it's between me and God'. Well I couldn't argue with him there. Anyway...since he wouldn't tell me the details I decided I'd configure a little story about his realization of being graced. In songwriting there's a little thing called creative license...all that means is the author has the freedom to create the information needed to make a point. So I came up with a fella named Joe Haney and told his story as it pertains to my Dad's life in Christ.
Last Word
For the beloved of God, at every situation in or circumstance of life, there's an absolute truth. That truth is His Word. The word 'amen' is found throughout Scripture. It means 'so be it'. As we close each prayer, that word is usually our final utterance...in a way its as if we're acknowledging or proclaiming God's 'so be it'. The Bible speaks of a still, small voice that calls to us from Heaven. That voice provides us with the truth of life. I believe the truth of all of Scripture is God's amen to His children. It must be an important truth...the last word in the Bible is Amen...the last word says it all.
Tater Jacobs Died
The Bible tells us we've been crucified with Christ...we died; that we no longer live but Christ lives in us. What does a dead person need?...well, life! That's what we are in Christ...a new creation with life...His. When a saint realizes through revelation that he or she is alive in Christ there's a mighty big whippin' going on in the eternal realm. Some combination of the Holy Spirit and the angels...I don't know really...but I do believe our enemy is gettin' another in the long line of butt-whuppings he receives until Christ returns. Ol' Tater died...but by the grace of God he lives forever in Christ.
Mystery
We ask an innumerable amount of questions don't we. This song contains several questions from my life...and the answer too. The answer is Jesus, the carpenter King. There is a mystery...but the mystery's been revealed...it's Christ in you, the hope of glory.
Good Reason
It's a true story about the events surrounding one of my best friend's journey to grace. I suppose one of the greatest things we can do with our friends is stand with them through whatever comes. This is a song about friendship for sure...but mainly its about the only reason there is for anything...love.
Goin' Home
There will come a moment in temporal time when every created thing will take its last breath. God says at that very instant, though we are absent from the body, we will be present with Him. As we all get closer to our completion, there's an eternal expression that's our gift to proclaim...I'm goin' home.
